Dear reader,
You have requested us for more articles related to literature and we have listened to your requests. We have now come up with yet another enclosure of literature titled KNOW YOUR ENGLISH.
It's quite common that we have seen many times that our friends or people near by use strange words, which we feel that we've not heard them any before. It's a fact that, most of us despite of knowing words of English language, commit many mistakes in construction of statements which may be grammatically correct but logically may sound awkward. One of the best example which I can give you is, you suffer from severe stomach ache and you went to a doctor. This statement would sound logically and technically sound. Once you say, you had a severe stomach ache last night and hence you went to watch a movie. This statement though being grammatically correct and sound, may sound useless when looked through logic. The logic here is seen this way- how could possibly one go to a movie hall when suffering from a stomach ache.
Few words, are misinterpreted with other meaning and we tend to use in what ever context we can not thinking of if that word would give the apt meaning. One best example which I can give you is.. the word PALATIAL. Yesterday, I went to my cousin's reception. One man in blue, tall and good looking with attractive dress, was welcoming every one to the party. Naturally he's expected to use good English which would suite his clothing. He did use good literature, but made a blunder when looked into the deep. The party was an alfresco, yet he invited everyone using palatial. Palatial means lavish. Any dictionary would give you the same meaning. Yes, that's true. Palatial though means lavish, often only goes with palace like buildings. It's not that how many words we know, it's that the number of words which we use correctly. Words including pen, dog, cook, book, etc.... start writing them on a paper. It's quite certain that most of us end up with 500-800 of such words. Few extraordinary people may go to 1000 words. (people of Indian native). It's the difference of hardly 200-400 words. Since English language is not our mother tongue, we often face many such difficulties in using language. One of the best techniques to avoid this inferiority is construction of words. This process, though tedious, can have greatest depths of knowing literature. No one is perfect. One can be approximated to be perfect. That can be you.
